Topic: In Conversation with Iain McGilchrist

This will be a conversation with Iain about aspects of his new book ‘The Matter with Things’ (2022) including his philosophical take on time, value and the sense of the sacred.

We will also be discussing his pathway into psychiatry, the time he spent at the Maudsley and Bethlem Hospitals training and as a consultant and his thoughts on the current state of psychiatry - as well as its future.

Dr Iain McGilchrist is a psychiatrist and writer.

He was formerly a Consultant Psychiatrist of the Bethlem Royal and Maudsley NHS Trust in London, where he was Clinical Director of their southern sector Acute Mental Health Services. He trained at the Maudsley Hospital in London, working on specialist units including the Neuropsychiatry and Epilepsy Unit, the Children’s Unit and the Forensic Unit, as well as, at Senior Registrar level, the National Psychosis Referral Unit and the National Eating Disorder Unit.

He is a former Fellow of All Souls College, Oxford, an associate Fellow of Green Templeton College, Oxford, a Fellow of the Royal College of Psychiatrists, a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts, a Consultant Emeritus of the Bethlem and Maudsley Hospital, London, a former research Fellow in Neuroimaging at Johns Hopkins University Medical School, Baltimore, and a former Fellow of the Institute of Advanced Studies in Stellenbosch.

His books include The Matter with Things, Against Criticism, The Master and his Emissary: The Divided Brain and the Making of the Western World, The Divided Brain and the Search for Meaning; Why Are We So Unhappy?, and Ways of Attending.
